Co-washing: A secret hack for healthy hair.

In the ever-evolving world of hair care, it can be a little overwhelming staying on top of the latest trends and techniques. One in particular that keeps coming up and seems here to stay is called "co-washing hair". Co-washing, short for conditioner washing, is simply a method of cleansing the hair using a conditioner instead of traditional shampoo. This practice has captured the attention of many hair enthusiasts (including this writer), promising a gentler and more moisturizing alternative to conventional hair care routines.

Co-washing hair involves using a conditioner as the sole product to wash the hair. Unlike regular shampoos, which contain detergents that can strip the hair of its natural oils, conditioner only washing relies on the conditioning properties to cleanse without stripping away moisture. The concept behind the co washing method is to maintain the hair's natural oils, promoting hydration and overall hair health. HiBAR solid shampoo bars and conditioner bars are already a very gentle alternative to traditional shampoo. So you might not notice a huge difference if you give co-washing a try. But for people with extremely dry hair, or those coming from a more harsh chemical-based shampoo, it can yield surprisingly big results.

Benefits of Co-Washing:

  1. Retains moisture: Does your hair feel dry and brittle? Co-washing helps retain the natural oils, resulting in well-hydrated and moisturized locks. This is particularly beneficial for people with damaged or chemically processed hair.
  2. Reduces frizz and promotes definition: Co-washing can help combat frizz, as the conditioner smooths the hair cuticle, reducing friction and preventing moisture loss. It also enhances curl definition, making it an attractive option for individuals with wavy hair, curly, or ultra fine curls. Our HiBAR Curl Conditioner Bars are a double-whammy for curl definition!
  3. Maintains color-treated hair: Our HiBAR Shampoo Bars for color treated hair are color-safe, but regular shampoos can fade hair color by stripping away the dye molecules. Co-washing offers a gentler alternative that helps preserve the vibrancy of the color for longer.

Co-Washing Technique:

  1. Choose the right conditioner: Look for conditioners specifically formulated for co-washing. These eco-hair products are typically lightweight formula, silicone-free, and provide gentle cleansing. Read the labels and choose a conditioner that suits your hair type and concerns. Ahem … cough, cough. We might have one particular brand in mind :)
  2. Wet your hair thoroughly: Before applying our non toxic shampoo and conditioner, wet hair with warm water to allow better distribution and penetration of the product.
  3. Apply the conditioner: Take a generous amount of conditioner and distribute it evenly throughout your hair, focusing on the roots and lengths. Massage conditioner into your scalp gently to remove any buildup or impurities. This step is essential for keeping everyone’s hair refreshed and nourished.
  4. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse your hair with lukewarm water until the hair completely rinses clean. Make sure not to leave any residue, as it may weigh down the hair and lead to hair breakage.
  5. Optional: HiBAR Conditioner Bars can be used as a leave-in conditioner. This can further enhance moisture and provide additional benefits for your specific hair needs. Some people even find success using a cleansing conditioner in combination with their regular routine for balance.

While co-washing products are great for lots of hair types, if you have a naturally oily scalp or you’re prone to scalp conditions like dandruff, you might not get great results. In those cases, occasional use of a sulfate free shampoo like HiBAR Maintain Shampoo Bars might be necessary to maintain a healthy balance.

Also of note, most conditioners can accumulate on the hair, leading to product buildup over time. This is also a case where incorporating a clarifying shampoo or occasionally alternating co-washing with traditional shampooing can help. And remember, co-washing works best for individuals with dry, textured hair, or damaged hair. Experimenting with different frequencies is the key. Different hair types respond differently to co-washing. Listen to your locks and they’ll tell you what they need!
